I have had these outside for about 10 years. Maybe longer. I'm in CA, so no snow, but temps up to 113 and short periods of freezing. Our freezes are about 20 deg for a handful of days. They are designed for the kids to stay open while using. They do on a level surface. That makes it easy to open all 3 lids at once to sort away. I have them stacked on an uneven surface, so the lid on the bottom doesn't stay open. They've held up much better than I would have predicted. The size is just right for turning a full bin over a garbage bag to take to the recycler. 2 full bins fill a 30 gal trash bag. Periodically, I hose them out. They stack nicely. The colors have predictably faded, but that's actually a plus.
I would buy them again, but won't need to because they are still great!
These bins by Suncast are a pretty neat deal. I bought them for my wife because she is really into recycling (I'd rather just throw most of that stuff away - nothing against recycling, but it's just easier and cleaner having once place for all trash). I really like how these are stackable and accessible through the lift lids. They are good size too! They can hold quite a bit of content, but I'd kind of like the openings to be slightly bigger. Although we would prefer other colors, they still look much better than the big plastic tubs she was using before - and they're easier to access. I would recommend these bins if you're looking for a recycling bin (or a set of bins) that takes very little square footage due to the vertical stacking design.
As "pop" drinking Oregonians, my family uses these recycling bins for our bottles and cans. We then take the cans and bottles to a recycling depot. We use the yellow bin for plastic bottles, the green bin for aluminum cans, and the blue bin for glass (blue recycling containers are always for glass where we live). We use special green plastic bags (the same size as a standard drawstring 13-gal trash bag, just green and labeled with a barcode instead of white), fill up the bags, and just turn in a whole bag all at once to the recycling depot. The workers there count it for us and credit our account with our refund. The green bags are wonderful, and they fit well into these bins if you are careful. I do have to remove a 90% full bag from the bin in order to fill it the last little bit, especially for cans, but that's not a big deal. The bins are easy to clean--and stay even cleaner when lined with a plastic bag. Easy peasy!
Bought 2 bins which are stacked together. We have 40 lbs of dog food in each bin. The hinges are a concern and loud when opening/closing. The weight seems to slightly flex the hinge on the bottom bin; does not want to stay open. The hinge on the top bin is slightly out of alignment, but does work and stays open. Once the dog food gets to about 8 cups remaining, it is hard to scoop as the bottom of the bins is not smooth and flat, there is a 3-4 inch hump down the middle, likely for strength. The plastic of the bin is strong, lids could be better made.
These bins are huge! I can fit 4 queen size pillows inside. I didn't realized how big it was until I got it. I really love it. Initially, I was thinking of putting it in the utility cabinet but It was too big. So while I was fixing the area where I will put these bins, I used it as containers for pillows and sheets. That's why I know I can fit pillows there. =) anyway, I really love this product and here's why:
Style and design: I initially thought the design will make it easy to be knock off to ground but it was really stable even when you stack them together. I like that they are different colors, it is easy to distinguish which recyclables with out putting any label. Although, I hope they have more colors. For now, I'm using it for papers & cardboards, Plastics and glasses & cans. The accessible flip cover is very useful and can easily lock in place. Also, the bins were constructed so that they stack together easily.
Size, Quality and Functionality: It's huge, I can't emphasize that enough. It is easy to clean. I've been using this for year now and there are no sign of this giving up. It was pretty well made. Don't let the lightness of the material fool you. It is sturdy and can withstand heavy load. The cover has a deep ridge so carrying it is easy.
Overall, I highly recommend this recycle bins.

I've had this product for over 3 years. I've used it for recycle sorting, and then one bin as compost. That project lasted about 8 months, and then I turned all 3 into toy chests for my baby. They cleaned out really easily (even from really gross badly attempted composting) and thoroughly with very little elbow grease. They're just now starting to get some cracks in the tops, because I've had WAY too much weight in all of them for the past 2 years as we've gotten more and more toys and moved the soft stuffed animals from the top one to a different container. Even with the cracks in the lids, they're still stacked and holding up. They've fallen over only once, while on medium pile carpet. They work best on a tile or hardwood floor, but I've had them on this medium pile carpet for a year and a half now, so still pretty stable overall. They are pretty big and will take up space, even though they're stackable, so keep that in mind. Somewhat visually appealing if you like the bright colors/plastic look, but wouldn't look so nice in a modern kitchen. Hinges are looking a little worse for the wear after 3 years of not-so-gentle use but haven't broken nor gotten difficult to open yet, so overall, it's definitely a good buy!
Recycling. We are all supposed to do it, but getting the tools to do it right can be expensive. These bins from Suncast are affordable and perfect. They stack nicely in the kitchen and each can open without moving the one above. I line them with large black trash sacks. When they are full, I take off the lid and remove the trash bag and replace it with another. The bins stay clean and ready to use again! When I originally started the recycling endeavor I placed the bins in the order of the weight of the products. I have since rearranged my bins to have the cans on the top since it is what we fill up the fastest. IT makes recycling easier and more manageable. It also makes it where everyone wants to help out! Being a little more fun means that the kids will help and want to recycle! They stack neatly like the photos. They are really big and roomy, too. When stacked, they are about 5 feet tall. Plenty of room for the recycleables.
I bought this after I had already spent a couple of hundred dollars on recycling stuff, which turned out to be not entirely successful. This stackable unit lives in my garage and currently holds miscellaneous recyclable plastics that our trash people won't pick up, as well as foam egg cartons, meat trays and takeout containers for the same reason. The third one is storing dog food. Inexpensive and easy to assemble. Light weight and an efficient use of limited space. I was very pleased, especially as I had already spent too much money on something that hadn't worked out very well. Our community no longer provides any kind of recycling containers & the trash people had taken a couple of my makeshift "solutions". This is working out well. Do I seem a little compulsive? They are somewhat bigger than expected, but that's not a bad thing. I EXPECTED they would be about the size of an old fashioned milk crate, like maybe 15x15x15" but NOPE. One of them is about twice that big, about two to maybe two and a half feet, they are not square, but they are definitely bigger than I expeceted. I know the measurements are right there, my brain still wanted to see them smaller. I do love the size, we can't put them all in the kitchen, so one is in the kitchen for recycling (the blue one of course) one is in the garage as a rag holder, and the other one is holding the dog's toys, which the dog goes to about twice a month and empties completely until she has found the exact one she wants. I think she enjoys having a box for all her toys, the other dog doesn't care about toys...just food.
Our city recently decided to stop accepting glass in the curb side recycling (arg!), so we needed to buy bins to store glass until we could take it to the central recycling facility ourselves. Because we would be storing for several weeks and outside, I wanted something that would be water-tight and weather-proof. I was very pleased with the weight of these bins - they are sturdy and do not bow or deform even when loaded with lots of glass. The lids are also nice and they "snap" open so that you do not have to hold them open to put things in the bins. They will keep the rain out 100%. The only thing that I wish is that the colors were toned down -- these are very bright (just as they appear in the photo) and so they don't look the greatest sitting out front.
I saw that some people had bought these to store dog food - I personally would not use them for that purpose as they are not totally air-tight. The food would go stale.
