It's ceramic and arrived perfectly safe/unbroken. The gold is very pretty - shiny and a nice color, not tacky or matte. I'm using it as a utensil holder in my kitchen and it's a great accent without being too attention grabbing. Plenty of room to hold lots of utensils (or anything else really).
I love this utensil holder. We used to have a metal one that rusted easily. This one is well made and classic. It matches most kitchen decor. It's heavy enough and tall enough to hold as many utensils as you want without falling over.
