I love these contraptions. They are perfect for paperback books and I got two of them to go on top of an existing book/CD rack. The color matches the light oak perfectly and since they are adjustable I can size them to match the existing 40 inch rack exactly! It does help that I am an engineer to put them together. The 'instructions' are only an exploded drawing. But the design is quite unique. I now have room for most of my paperback books in one place. Although there is NEVER enough room for books! I may try to figure out how to stack another two of these on top, but that will require ingenuity on my part to secure them together...
Product is somewhat cheaply made, but the design is so handy that it is worth having anyway. I have found multiple uses for it, including adjustable storage for plastic container lids. Assembly is required. The pieces are not labeled (A, B, C...), but if you compare the pieces to the pictures, you can figure it out.
Max weight 15 lbs.
A fantastic book rack for all! perfect price and quality compared to other low priced book racks. For the price you are getting style, durability and way more space than the competitors!! can be assembled in 10 to 25 minutes and only takes a screwdriver and bit thinking. (took me under 5 minutes to assemble. for some instructions can be a bit hard to follow.
PROS
Style
Durable
Sturdy frame (when assembled properly)
Great Space
Stands on its own
Can be extended for much more space
Supports many books
CONS
Some parts are a bit thin
during assembly not much room for error when screwing screws down or else you could break the wood beam.
This book rack extender has been a great help and is definitely better than book ends. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the product description states no assembly required. However if you look at the attached picture of it out of the box, there's a pack of screws and a stack of wooden pieces. We found the assembly to be simple, but it's not what was expected and is an inaccurate description since it does need to be assembled. What I really like about this is how easy it is to use once it's put together. It slides effortlessly which is great if you're often adding or removing items from it and it's versatile because you can easily adjust the sizing of an area if needed. When it's fully extended, you do have larger gaps. We've had to be considerate of where we put smaller items because there are spots where the slats are too high in the back and the items fall through. It can also be a bit tricky with bigger books that are taller or wider than your average large hardback book. We usually stand those on end and they stay put that way. Overall I would purchase this again. It's been easy to use and a helpful item to have around.
I was hesitant to purchase this unit because the price was so good for what it seemed like I'd be getting. So, I hit the place my order button knowing that Amazon would have my back in a pinch. Well, no need for that because this product was exactly as advertised, if not better! We keep my toddler daughter's book on a small shelf in our living room that was original designed for display purposes. Since it was not originally supposed to hold books, there's no edge on it and her books fall over if she grabs too many at once. We didn't want to drill into the wood (it's part of a built-in) and were considering the old, traditional metal bookends like you find in a library. I was hesitant about those because the light-weight ones are plain looking and the nicer ones are heavy enough that I'd worry about them falling onto her toes. This shelf was the perfect solution. It has a really nice look and adjusted to fit the space we needed to it perfectly! There are compartments for books with how it expands, which actually is nicer than we'd originally thought we needed! This was a great find and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again in the future.

it is pretty, it is not retal sturdy. It WILL hold the books up. I needed something to go on top of my shelf that would hold the books up.
I ordered 2 of these. One of them was missing one screw. You DO have to put this together. The instructions are not the greatest, it was hard for me to see how the slats went in... my eyesight is not the best. What I did was color each slat (in the instructions) a different color and traced the line from the picture of the screw to where it went. That made it super easy. I had to use my drill also, I have wrist problems, I could not get it in good enough with the philips screwdriver. Just a heads up to other seniors out there! The instructions said 20 minutes to put it together the first one took an hour, the second one half hour.
I really like this book rack. Assembly was like working on a puzzle. It was as much fun putting it together as it was having a finished product to hold up my cookbooks in the kitchen.
My package was complete and well labeled. The instructions are not very detailed, but the drawings are good and if you look carefully, you can figure it out. Minimal exertion. The holes are pre-drilled. The pieces fit together well. I used and the screws they provided and a hand screw driver. No fancy tools needed.
When I finished putting it together, i kind of wanted more things to build....It's a cool design and fun to make.
The bookrack is not super strong, but it does what it needs to. I like the versatility in sizing. I am quite happy with my purchase.
There's a lot to like about this little shelf. It's good quality wood, beautifully finished.
It's only moderately difficult to arrange for assembly, on par with a multi-part IKEA product.
A few things to watch for:
The labels on the pieces C and D were reversed on my shelf. The pieces are not the same, and the initial result looked like something out a Dr. Seuss illustration. It's difficult for some people to visualize parts spatially, but lay them out on the table and make sure the slots for the slats align. If they don't, trust your eyes and judgement, not the labels. All of the slats are identical.
Tips:
From middle school wood shop class: use the largest Phillips (star) head screwdriver that will fit in the screw. It will make the job easier, and preserve the screw from stripping. The screws are aluminum. (What?!)
- Pre-screw each of the holes on the four upright pieces. Just turn a screw into the hole about half the length of the screw, then remove the screw. The guide holes drilled at the factory are small, and not deep enough. This combined with aluminum screws make it very difficult to seat the slats properly otherwise.
- Insert all the screws into their holes in the slats and turn them until just a millimeter or two shows on the other side. Leave the screws there. The exposed tip will act to center the screw in the destination hole on the upright piece. Now you're ready for assembly.
- Place the slats in the slots, and turn each screw just far enough to grab and hold, then move on to the next screw. This will hold the entire shelf together loosely and make it much easier to start the remaining screws and to follow up tightening them all.
Hint:
I used a few small (3/8") self-stick felt furniture pads on the bottom to protect my furniture when the shelf is sliding. I used 10 or 12 just to be comfortable nothing would scratch.
It's a nice little shelf, well worth the price. Have your coffee or tea in you before you begin and everything should turn out fine.
I had originally been looking for bookends to hold my cookbooks. When I saw this book rack, I loved the look. I searched Amazon to compare it to similar products, but I ended up buying this one. It's awesome! I love that I can separate my books into sections. And it's great that I can add more books. It extends to 2 feet, which is more than other book racks I saw. The nice thing is if you have only a few books, it will hold them nicely in place and you can put little ornaments or even cooking gadgets in the empty spaces and it will look very attractive. If you fill it with books, it's very sturdy and takes up hardly any more room than the books themselves. It's so attractive, I love it. I also purchased a bamboo book holder to go with it. I'm thrilled with my purchase.
The instructions are terrible and claim the assembly should take a total of 20 minutes. The first five minutes will be spent trying to decipher the instructions. Once you figure out after the five minutes that the instructions are indeed useless, you can then spend the next 15 minutes matching the holes in the wooden pieces with the screws. I almost wish I didn’t waste time trying to understand the instructions because I think it had confused me more than if I had just gone ahead and started assembling. Once assembled, the product is pretty functional and it looks great! I have attached a couple pictures of my unimpressive collection of cookbooks that the book rack make look a little more respectable.
