This thing is a BITCH to set up by yourself...you need at least 3 arms. One holding the shelf end into the wall, one keeping the constantly-sliding-in-and-out tension rods held tightly to the other wall, and one twisting the fasteners to tighten the whole thing in place. This is definitely a two person job, it took me like three days of trying, giving up, and throwing it into the corner and walking away, before somehow I finally got it up. Beware if you live alone, you need someone on hand to help you get this in place or you're in for a frustrating ride. However, once you get it up and it's secure (and level, ugh) it literally doesn't move and it's a great product! I have things on the shelf portion and I have hangers holding a couple of jackets I wear most frequently on the open rods. One is leather, the other is suede, and combined with the storage boxes on the shelf portion, this thing is fantastic and super locked into place even when holding some heavy-ish jackets. It ain't going nowhere. And thank god because if I have to put it up again by myself I will scream.
I like this product, but I don't love it. The instructions aren't great, but its fairly straightforward. To set the length of the bars you're basically screwing a pointed screw into the metal rod. It damaged the inner rod - dents it up, scratches it... If you get the length a little off the first few times you just have damaged rod sticking out. This also impacts how easy it would be to reuse in a different space, and leaves me with serious reservations about the shelf stability.
I know it's approved for about 40lb but I am not comfortable putting that kind of weight on these shelves. After about 20lb it starts to slip, no matter how tight I make the tension. Its also annoying that there is no option to have the three inner rods don't extend to the full length of the shelf. And finally, the metal and plastic look isn't really my style. Its kind of hospital vibes.
So far, however, the shelves are doing their job. They create storage in a spot that I've been struggling to use for years. So, for that alone, I am happy.
It took a little messing around to get it to stay, but once it does it holds as promised. Setting it up with a second pair of hands would help a lot, but I was able to do it solo after a couple tries.
I installed this alone but it would be easier with a second pair of hands. It did dig into my paint however which is not good because I rent.
However, I use this as a plant shelf in my window and have had no problems with it otherwise. The shelf is literally a collection of round tubes so I put a peice of cardboard down on top to keep my plant pots level.
I was able to install it inside the linen closet easily all by myself and I am not a handy women type. The pictured instructions on amazon listing is the easiest to follow. It should hold up well as long as it's properly installed. I'm a happy customer!
