I've oriented this both ways and I think it's best to have it face up. If you have pans that are heavy the wire gets stressed if u use them as shelves. Works great for smaller pans though. Super helpful and keep my cabinets organized!!!
Writing this review long after purchasing. These racks have held up extremely well and I'm so glad I purchased them. We use them flat so the pans rest horizontally.
It is a great idea. The only downside is that it doesn't have enough slots for a basic pot set. You would need to order more than one.
I got my 2-pack on sale for $15 which is a great deal. I put my 10 smallest fry pans in the pair using slightly loose rubber bands on both top holders to provide a more secure base for the smallest pans. I coupled them with two Spectrum Diversified Euro Lid Organizer to hold my lids and my baking pans. Everything has a place now.

Super nice set of 2...Very sturdy. Holds cast iron pans well. Wish the spacing was just a 1/4" more. I have pampered chef pan that is a very tight fit. Other than that, I love that it came as a set, I love the design.
